The First of Many

Technically I do not start medical school until August but it feels like I already have since I am participating in a program that is under the jurisdiction of the school I will be attending. On Monday, for the first time since I have started the program, I actually had a satisfying day. It was the kind of day that I hope to have everyday at medical school for the next four years.

I might be a bad friend

A couple of weeks ago I was having a conversation with a friend and he asked why we always talk about what is going on in his life but never discuss what is going on in mine? I could have simply said, ‘I don’t know,’ but that isn’t me and I replied back asking, ‘What was wrong with that?’ He explained to me that in a friendship both parties have to be open and honest and that included discussing what is going on in both persons’ lives not just one person’s. I think that is a great protocol for a friendship but I feel I am a pretty good friend too even though I refuse to share what is going on in my life.

Networking…again

I wrote earlier how much I despise the concept of networking. My definition might be off but I see networking as creating a bunch of insincere connections for the specific intent of getting ahead. As Holden Caulfield would say, that is phony! Yet, in my first week at medical school, and classes have not even started, that was the message and word I heard the most. I actually got into a debate with my research PI over the merits of networking and it basically concluded with her telling me that if I do not embrace it now, I am in for a world of disappointment.
